□ On moving day expect the unexpected; few moves go smoothly. It helps for the whole crew to
maintain a positive "can do" attitude. The combination of excess anxiety, lack of sleep and too much
caffeine can be very disorienting.

□ For children, relocating can be an especially emotional experience; toddlers can get colicky,
teenagers will be reluctant to leave behind their established social group. Kids that are resourceful
and strong enough should be given something to do. Otherwise, little ones can be left with a
reputable and responsible babysitter. If applicable, plan to accomodate elderly parents and children
with special needs.

□ Dogs are generally easier to move than cats, and adapt quicker to their new surroundings. Cats,
in particular, don't like having their daily routines disrupted. Plan on bringing a favorite toy or two,
and any medications your pet may require. In some instances, it may make sense to enlist the aid of a
professional pet transporter.

□ Of course, you'll need to have an up-to-date,
well running vehicle, one big enough to fit all your
belongings. When loading the truck, observe the standard
rule - distribute the weight 60%/40%, front to back -
putting the largest items in first. Don't overload.

□ Checklist for the do-it-yourself mover: completely fill
the gas tank, check out the tires, get traffic report
updates and clear driving directions. Look into road
conditions, factors such as wind, rain or snow. Bring
along a fully charged cell phone, and be sure to have
enough emergency cash on hand.

□ It will cost you a lot more if the mover can not park
the truck next to where it will be unloaded. Do whatever
you can to reserve adequate parking for the moving truck.

□ Pace yourself. Proper carrying technique means only carrying what you can handle.

□ When your movers arrive at your home or office, make sure entrances and all pathways are kept
clear of any debris. Upon delivery, check your shipped goods for damage. If anything was broken
or lost, report the facts promptly.

□ If you are relocating due to work change, and qualify for the moving expense tax deduction, be sure
to keep all receipts as documentation in preparing your next tax form.

□ All that's left now is the unpacking. Congratulations on your successful move!
